A Hand on Your Shoulder

We are so sorry for your loss and for the pain you are in because of it.

This isn’t an article about 5 easy steps to overcome grief. This is not to wipe away the pain that you are in. You are going through an incredible loss, and we don’t want to minimize anything you are feeling.

This is simply a hand on your shoulder. A reminder that you are not alone in the depths of your grief.

Dr. Sarah Williams has been there with you.

After graduating from Capella University with a Ph.D. 2010, Dr. Sarah became a professor at a local community college. Life was good. She had a lovely family and was where she wanted to be in her career.

But, education does not protect one from grief. With the loss of her mother to pancreatic cancer and then the diagnosis of her husband with terminal cancer within a short time period, Dr. Sarah found herself reeling. Caring for her husband up until the end and his death struck her to her very core.

Reflecting on that experience, Dr. Sarah muses, “As a Ph.D. student, I am supposed to have all the tools to work through things and therapists did not know what to do with me. Having a doctorate did not insulate me from the experience of trauma.”

She found herself wondering, “Why am I not able to cope and handle this?”

Her experience with Psychotherapy motivated her to go back to school to become a Clinical Psychotherapist that could help people like herself, but also those who are hurting and seeking healing.

To those experiencing loss as she did, she has a simple truth for you:

“There is hope, you are not alone, you are no different from anyone else. When you talk about your struggle, you end the darkness. I’m not saying that I have it all together, but it means that I can move forward and admit that I still struggle. I still keep going, that I can still inspire someone else."

"Let’s lend light to the struggle; let’s end the darkness.”
